Is it just us or does The CW has major cause for celebration these days? Along with a slew of exciting new shows, the network will be turning a whopping 10 years old in September, which means viewers can look forward to lots of fun events this fall — including a Supergirl and The Flash musical crossover episode — in honor of this special milestone.
Oh, and if everything goes according to plan, you might also soon spy Elena Gilbert roaming around Mystic Falls.
CW president Mark Pedowitz basically confirmed as much during a panel at the 2016 Television Critics Association on Thursday, August 11. With the recent San Diego Comic-Con announcement that The vampire Diaries Season 8 would be the show’s last, fang fans are now more eager than ever to see the talented brunette on their screens again. “There are discussions going on with Nina,” the network boss announced. “We’d love to have her back. She was great for the CW. She was integral to The vampire Diaries. These are discussions that go on.”
In fact, during a recent interview with TVLine at SDCC, executive producer Julie Plec pointed out that the actress made an “emotional promise” to her — one that she hopes the young starlet keeps. “There’s been friendship promises made, and now we’ll see if we can deliver on them,” she said.
Dobrev’s former cast mate Zach Roerig, in support of Plec’s comments, also chimed in with his two cents on the matter: “At the end of the day, we’d love to have her back. This show wouldn’t be what it is without her.” Amen to that!
That being said, even if negotiations don’t work out — whether due to scheduling conflicts or other reasons — Pedowitz assures fans that Plec has crafted a satisfying conclusion to the long-running series. “Hopefully [Nina] will be back but should it not work out, Julie has planned a really great series finale that will satisfy fans.”
Pedowitz also explained out that the decision to bring TVD to a close was actually led by Julie herself, who advised the network and Warner Bros. TV that the time had come to wrap up the storytelling and finish on a high note. “Peter Roth [chief executive of Warner Brothers Television] and Julie and I had discussions. We collectively came to the same place,” Pedowitz remarked. “Julie really got there even before Peter and I did, which was this was the right time to end the series, go out in the right way. We backed Julie on that decision.”
However, before you start to tear up at the thought of saying goodbye to your favorite supernatural characters, just know there’s some good news: The Originals’ fate is not tethered to TVD’s. “It’s a separate series at this point,” he acknowledged, expressing hope that the Mikaelsons and their epic family saga will continue to thrill viewers long after the Salvatore brothers take their final bow. “They share a mythology, but they diverge and they live very well on its own. We’ll see how it does when it comes back this season.”
